Disabled drivers do need to be considered

Saturday 31st January 2009, 12:10AM GMT.

Letter: Many drivers are inconsiderate to those who are less fortunate than themselves.Disabled people have to frequently wait for someone to return to their car who is not disabled so that they can manoeuvre out of the car parking space.

Other able-bodied drivers think it is okay to pull up to a cashpoint where disabled spaces are situated and park alongside to go to the cashpoint then enter a shop where the cashpoint and car parking spaces are located and then return staring at a disabled person having difficulty obtaining access to their car due to the able bodied person’s actions.

On other occasions outside Spencers Mall in Telford Town Centre, where the designated car parking spaces are situated to make access to the town centre easier for disabled people, many cars park by the black barrier blocking the path of wheelchair users.

This car parking area is clearly marked with yellow hatchings, which mean no parking, as it is the turning area for disabled people to utilise.

Many able-bodied people seem to think that as this is not a designated disabled car parking space they will park diagonally across the hatchings, thus preventing disabled people being able to turn around easily.

It is high time able-bodied people realised how difficult access is to shopping areas via wheelchair or with the aid of walking sticks without carelessness and thoughtless behaviour in this manner.
