The mystery of “missing” Kate Winslet

Has Telford got something against British actress Kate Winslet, asks blogger Carl Jones
She’s sweeping the awards board this year for her performances in The Reader and Revolutionary Road, but Telford film fans have no idea whether the plaudits are deserved, because the town’s Odeon cinema isn’t showing either of them.
When it comes to The Reader, there are mitigating circumstances. It was released on the quiet, before anyone knew Kate would pick up a Golden Globe plus Oscar and Bafta nominations for her performance, so there was no guarantee of a big audience.
But Revolutionary Road, which was officially released in the UK today, is a different matter. First of all, it marks the eagerly awaited reunion of Kate and Leonardo DiCaprio for the first time since Titanic, and secondly, it’s been all over the news since it earned Kate won her first ever best actress Golden Globe.
Cinemas have to make money. I understand that. And if a slapstick Police Academy 23 is expected to put more bums on seats than an arty-farty production which is lauded by the critics, you can follow the logic and see which one the multiplex will choose.
But this Revolutionary Road has A-list stars, has received wall-to-wall publicity, and its topic about normal families enduring normal daily struggles is something the Telford masses can relate to.
Worst of all, Telford cinema has been running “coming soon” trailers for the film, lulling viewers into the false belief that they’ll have the chance to see it.
It might not quite be a trades description offence, but it’s misleading, frustrating . . . and plain stupid.

Maybe there’s an opportunity to get clever here, Carl, and get together with the local cinema once a month or so for a ‘Shropshire Star presents . . .’ with a film picked by you that Shropshire has missed out on. With plenty of in-paper and online promotion, that should fill a few seats.

I had an arguement with the Odeon in Telford a while ago my son wanted to see a film which they had advertised before another feature film, I pointed out if your going to advertise it people are going to assume your showing it. No where on the previews do they say it might be avaliable at this cinema! Personally id wait till its out on Dvd now and have the comfort of the sofa and it be a lot cheaper!!!

This is why most people are downloading films, (Downloading Films is Ilegal in most cases, I do not recommend downloading!) the cinemas arent showing all films that are released, and now with prices going up into the stupid ranges where it will proberly cost a DVD to watch a film.

Coz the movie sux? I enjoy a good movie as much as the next guy but i have no idea what this moive is about. I have heard kate winslet getting awards for it but still heard nothing about the movie. So logic dictates if you dont now about it then its not worth finding out about it.

It it were up to you, there would be no cinema. In fact we’d still be living in caves.

why don’t you look into ‘missing’ staff from shropshire county council, those who led into unitary and then left, and others whose face just ddnt fit. some one should ask under freedom of info for a list of the staff who got big pay outs and the total cost to shropshire people?
