Talk on £8m plans for town

Friday 30th January 2009, 11:49AM GMT.

WellingtonA big “people power” consultation exercise will begin on Monday into an £8 million scheme to regenerate Wellington town centre.

Telford & Wrekin Council hopes the development will create jobs for the struggling construction industry and be a shot in the arm for the town’s economy.

Consultations will be held around the town.

What I want to know is what will be the real cost to the local community, the £8m that the project is going to cost – will that money be borrowed and if so what will be the extra cost to the local tax payer.

Hopefully the finance costs will be offset by savings made from not possibly having to rent the present accommodation that the office staff are using, or if the accommodation is owned by the council will it be sold to reduce the £8m.

The impct upon the local parking with 200 staff being located in one place – I bet the traders will not be happy if their present customers cannot park.

Why do we need a bigger and better Library – with many people having the internet at home these days much of what the library has to offer can be done on line.

I think many of these schemes are all about Councillors wanting to leave their mark on a place.

What Wellington needs is Shops. I live in Wellington but never shop there because there is nothing in Wellington I would want to buy. The only time I walk into town is if I need to use the Post Office. So until then I will continue to Shop at Shrewsbury and Telford.

At least wellington gets redevelopment, just because it is part of Telford
Newport which is Telford and Wrekins second town, gets very little in the way of development beacuse its seen as a feeder to Telford

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear.
