Survey call over windfarm route
Thursday 29th January 2009, 11:18AM GMT.
Householders living along potential windfarm routes in Powys are being urged to get structural surveys carried out amid fears thousands of lorries carrying wind turbine parts could have an impact on historic buildings.
Dozens of protesters attended a meeting of Welshpool Town Council’s planning committee yesterday to hear how developers plan to carry turbine parts, including blades of up to 45m long, through their town to various windfarm sites.
Robert Robinson, council clerk, said the potential damage to buildings could have a serious impact on the town.
He said roads, buildings and trees could be damaged or destroyed as the massive objects are transported through the area to windfarm developments in the south of the county.
“Up to 20 lorries would end up travelling through Welshpool if developers get their way,” he said.
“I’ve been told they plan to travel up the town’s main high street and as we all know Welshpool has a lot of historic buildings that don’t sit on concrete foundations.
“I urge all householders to make sure they get structural surveys done on their homes before the lorries come and again afterwards, otherwise it could end up costing them an awful lot of money.”
Members agreed to hold a public meeting at Welshpool Town Hall within the next few weeks, to give people a chance to express their views. Mr Robinson said a date would be arranged over the next few days.
