Petition over state of roads presented
Thursday 29th January 2009, 1:15PM GMT.
Councillors who branded a Shropshire village’s roads the “worst in the UK” have taken a 150-signature petition to county council bosses calling for action to make improvements.
Councillors Colin Taylor and Heather Kidd are urging officials to take action over the state of the roads in Highley, near Bridgnorth.
Residents rushed to support their cause after the Shropshire Star featured the village’s crumbling pavements and potholed roads, which councillors likened to a wild west town.
Yesterday they presented the petition to Councillor Malcolm Pate, leader of Shropshire County Council, and Councillor John Everall.
Councillor Kidd said: “The roads budget for Highley is woefully inadequate. The village needs some real investment in the very near future.”
Councillor Taylor said: “I think people have just got fed up with writing into the county. We tried to find out how many people have had their cars damaged by potholes but the council says they do not get any complaints.
“When we ask people though, it seems to be a different story. I don’t know what is happening to the figures.”
Following the handing over of the petition, Councillor Pate said: “I can confirm that some maintenance works have had to be delayed this year as our highways staff have had to deal with the extensive flooding problems following storms which severely affected the Bridgnorth area in September.
“Works however are now back on track and we have an extensive programme detailed for the next two years.
“All roads in Shropshire are subject to regular inspections and any safety defects are repaired as a priority.”
