New theatre VIP revealed
Thursday 29th January 2009, 11:45AM GMT.
The Earl of Wessex will give Shrewsbury’s new theatre the royal seal of approval after he accepted an invitation to open the £28 million building.
As exclusively revealed on the Shropshire Star website today, Prince Edward will visit the town on March 25 to perform the official opening ceremony at Theatre Severn in Frankwell.
Before arriving at the venue he will officially unveil the new Monkmoor Campus for Severndale Special School and Wilfred Owen Primary School.
Organisers said they were “delighted” that he accepted their invitation to open the theatre in what has been described as a major coup.
On his tour of the building, the prince will meet many who have been involved in the project and will see a special performance of Romany Wood, the opening production.
The show will feature a choir of 300 Shropshire primary school children, the Shropshire Youth Orchestra and Shrewsbury’s Melanie Nakhla from the girl group All Angels.
Lezley Picton, arts and heritage manager, said: “The opening of Theatre Severn is an historic day for the county. We really are delighted that Prince Edward . . . accepted the invitation.”

Why is so much time being wasted on such a large white elephant, I guarantee that this whole project will turn out to be nothing but a millstone around the necks of the Shrewsbury taxpayers.
