Dunfield’s sights on club and country

Terry DunfieldNew Shrewsbury Town midfielder Terry Dunfield is eyeing success for club and country as he settles into life at the Prostar Stadium.

The 26-year-old completed his protracted transfer from Macclesfield earlier this week in time to make a debut in Tuesday’s goalless draw at Barnet.

Dunfield is thrilled to have wrapped up a  move to Shropshire and is excited at the prospect of playing a part in Town’s promotion push.

And he is hoping a first full international cap for Canada, where he was born and raised before moving to England at the age of 15, can be a by-product of success with Shrewsbury.

“As soon as I heard Shrewsbury were interested, I wanted to be here the next day,” said Dunfield, a former Manchester City youngster who has signed on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

“It’s great looking up the table instead of over my shoulder. Looking around the coach on Tuesday, there are some quality players here and what a good manager to play for.

“It’s a brilliant stadium, a great set of lads and an opportunity to be involved in the mix-up at the end of the season.”

On his Canada aspirations, Dunfield added: “I haven’t played a full international but I’ve been involved in the under-20 team and the under-23 Olympic team but we didn’t qualify.

“I was on the reserve list for the last World Cup qualifier against Jamaica. Maybe coming here and hopefully getting a few wins might get me there.”

Dunfield was pleased with his first start in blue-and-amber at Underhill.

That was his first outing since appearing for Macclesfield in the 1-0 FA Cup third round defeat at the hands of Everton on January 3, and Dunfield is confident he has plenty more to offer.

“The last time I played or trained, really, was the Everton game so I haven’t done much since then with all this going on,” he added.

“I’ve done a bit in the gym but not really trained much so hopefully there is more to come.”
