Conway ‘breached rules’ over son’s pay

Thursday 29th January 2009, 12:29PM GMT.

Derek ConwayDisgraced former Shropshire MP Derek Conway was today ordered by the Commons standards watchdog to repay £3,757 of taxpayers’ money he used to employ his elder son Henry.

A critical report by the Standards and Privileges Committee found Mr Conway breached parliamentary rules by paying Henry an “unnecessarily high” salary.

The watchdog MPs said it demonstrated “a serious lapse of judgement” and ordered the former Shrewsbury and Atcham MP to make a written apology to the Commons.

Mr Conway was suspended from the House of Commons last year after the committee found he misused taxpayer-funded staff allowances to pay his youngest son Freddie a salary and bonuses while he was a full-time student in Newcastle. He was ordered to repay up to £13,160.

The focus of the committee’s second investigation was on payments made to his elder son Henry, between 2001 and 2004.

He was employed as a research assistant for 18 hours a week and was paid an initial £8,000 a year which was increased to £10,000 a year, plus bonuses totalling £3,838, according to the report.

It means he pocketed a total of £35,744 during the period he worked for his father.

The new report comes a year after David Cameron expelled Mr Conway from the Conservative Party by stripping him of the Tory whip. The Old Bexley and Sidcup MP is now listed as an Independent Conservative. Mr Conway’s case prompted a review of MPs’ allowances and arrangements for employing their staff, leading to much tighter rules on the employment of family members.

What is it about Shrewsbury & Atcham MPs, past & present? Conway? Marsden kept changing parties and all Kawczynski is bothered about is getting his name in the media spotlight with a succession of bizarre rants and activities.

There may be others to come, but the indications are that one crosses Cameron at one’s peril, any jiggery, pokery and you are out – and rightly so. Notice, nothing from Brown when his Welsh Secretary, Peter Hain was found guilty of “not declaring” £100,000 for his leadership election funds – now let’s see what he does about the truly outrageous practices of our “inoble Lords”.
What’s the betting the next Conservative who’se guilt or innocence is yet to be announced (the lady from ?) will also get the chop if she is criticised.
They need a permanent CID team in the Commons to keep up with the work.

Derek Conway’s paltry fine is an insult to all Shrewsbury tax payers especially at a time of economic hardship for many. This man and his family have dishonestly pocketed thousands of the publics hard earned money. As a longterm resident of Shrewsbury I feel particularly aggrieved by his conduct and believe that others must have know what he was up to while he was MP here. Letting him off with such a light punishment sends the signal that some people can get away with such serious offenses and corrupt behaviour.

Harold is spot on “What is it with Shrewsbury MPs?”. Stuart’s comment ” They need a permanent CID team in the Commons to keep up with the work” is also very accurate but should add House of Lords, Scottish Parliment, Welsh Assembly and the European Parliment :-(

I wonder how many past and present MPs would be prepared for all their dealings to be scrutinised?

Isn’t there something in the Bible about “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone”?
