Why should he not, as asserted by Jackie Brennand, have the right to drive again if caught?

For driving at 100mph? The traffic in the video was sparse, and the driver’s lane discipline far better than many drivers I see every day who struggle to achieve 40 in a 60.

For tailgating? Admittedly, no excuse for driving that close to the Mercedes SUV in the A5, but the Merc driver did display arrogance by pulling out dangerously close to the driver in the video.

I must admit, it’s quite an achievement reaching “nearly” 100mph in a Rover Metro, but it’s not a thing I would try. The same speed in my Alfa Brera, however, is merely “impulse power” as is the case of most cars these days.

Further, Ms Brennand states, “they keep on doing it”. Do they? Who? On the basis of one video clip? The driver in the video, whilst driving on London Road, was just keeping up with the flow of the traffic. Commendable, I’d say.

“It’s like a licence to commit murder”. Is that the act of driving in itself, or driving at 100mph? If the former, then there are 33 million potential murderers in the country. If the latter, how the heck do Germans ever survive on the un-restricted sections of Autobahnen?

Of course I sympathise with Olwen Sides; losing a loved one through a RTA must be distressing beyond belief. But pledging their support to BRAKE is misguided, as they offer nothing constructive in terms of road safety improvements. Could I ask what the causative factor was in the death of Corrine Thomas?

Mr Farrar is wrong, also. “speed” is, of course, a major contributor to road accidents. It always will be. Drive at 0mph (i.e. no speed) then accidents won’t happen. More than 0mph, then there will always be scope for crash. I think Mr Farrar needs to address the differences between “speed”, “speeding”, and “inappropriate speed”.

This is not a story. This is a report on someone driving contrary to the seemingly dull-witted driving standards I see every day on our roads. Next time you fail to indicate on a roundabout, or fail to indicate full-stop, or can’t read road markings, or can’t drive to the speed limit when conditions clearly permit, or hog the middle lane on a motorway when doing 60, or leave your rear fog-lights on in fog-free conditions, or overtake on double-white lines, think on. You’re no better than the lad in this video.

My deepest sympathies to Ms Sides, her loss is indeed tragic, but…

@sheets tirreur: I couldn’t have put it better myself.

Hysterical, knee jerk reactions and bandwagon jumping serve no purpose whatsoever.

    Whats so bad about h

Ok, so he’s stupid. Not so much the driving but showing he was having fun. His driving compared to many on the road was actually not that bad. Yes, stupid to take his hands off the wheel, but the tailgating was not his “offence”, the car pulled into his gap so he dropped back.
Many cars were travelling much faster than him, if it was typical drivers on that road, then big percentage will have been on the mobile too !.

To be fair, what about the black car he was tailgating, it must have been going the same speed or faster for them to achieve those speeds driving behind it!

I have to admit when I saw the comment by Jackie Brennand I thought it was very unhelpful. Young people have always been foolish it is nothing new. Her OTT response especially the bit about showing off was unfortunate. I have seen this and other councillors of this borough in action and showing off appears to be almost a requisite of the job.
More understanding of young people and an effort to find out where they are coming from is something this town desparately needs.
I think the county council seem more in touch their video makes the point.
