Hotel bid is halted

Telephone House was demolishedDevelopers behind plans for a multi-million pound hotel in Shrewsbury town centre have withdrawn their application after heritage guardians raised concerns about the proposals, planning chiefs said today.

Dunedin’s plans for the site of the former Telephone House in Smithfield Road have been scrutinised by a number of organisations, and the decision to withdraw the proposals follows concerns about the scale and design of the nine-storey 111-bedroom hotel.

Ian Kilby, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council planning services manager, said Dunedin had withdrawn the proposals following a meeting where  English Heritage outlined its concerns.

But Mr Kilby said fresh plans would be lodged “imminently” and developers would be working with planners and the heritage organisation to ensure they are more acceptable.

Today English Heritage said it welcomed the opportunity to look at alternative plans for the site. A spokeswoman said it is hoped the new scheme will “fit better in the historic landscape”.
