Council tax rise to fund repairs

Wednesday 28th January 2009, 2:10PM GMT.

LudlowLong-awaited repairs to key historical areas of Ludlow are set to get under way after councillors agreed a rise of more than seven per cent in council tax.

Residents last night heard how the 7.1 per cent increase in Ludlow Town Council’s share of the council tax, which had already been approved by councillors, will finance essential maintenance.

More than 50 attended the town council’s AGM last night to hear that the urgent repairs to the Buttercross, which has been shrouded in scaffolding for months, will cost about £43,000.

Henley Road Cemetery also needs attention including drainage work costing about £10,000.

And a collapsed wall in Castle Gardens comes with a heavy price tag of £40,000, the meeting heard.

Town councillor Martin Taylor-Smith said: “As residents will have seen from last night there are changes coming about in the town council and the focus over the next year will be about providing a more efficient service and rolling out a comprehensive programme of work.”

He said the district and county councils were assisting Ludlow town council with its resources.

On Monday councillors unanimously approved the budget for 2009/10 and issued a precept to Shropshire Council of £309,989, which, based on band D equivalent properties, would result in an average council tax of £84.82 for a band D property.

Meanwhile, Craven Arms town councillors approved their new precept for the town last night. Chairman Councillor Neville Stephens said they decided on a budget of £35,000 for the year £5,000 less than last year.

    7% !!!!

Watch out, the rest of Shropshire, recession and belt-tightening obviously hasn’t hit our free-spending public servants yet. Grabbing it while they can is set to become a wider trend.

Obviously, the Ivory Towers, in which Ludlow councillors live, must be gold-plated as well.

Oh My Goodness! 7.1%. How about 5% and the councillors stop free lunches, take a reduction in pay/expenses and ask where the public want the money spent?

Dear Rodney – as you obviously know so much better how to run the town – why not stand for election?

this i am afraid is the cost of living in a town with so much history and historic buildings. some gra nts may be available. ensuring old buildings are safe will benefit ludlovians in the long run through increased tourism. i am proud to have lived in that great town in the 1950′s

Once the repairs have been completed will there be a reduction in the council tax, I bet not, they will get comfortable with spending the extra money.

Woody and Codsallman – generally parish councillors like those on ludlow town council do not get paid at all. I don’t know if Ludlow has a scheme for payments but I bet if you averaged it out it would be way below the national minimum wage!

i am always very critical of this pugilistic council but in this case they are right to spend the money. it is a similar principle to the government, both are creating jobs during difficult times. well done ludlow council
