Bucks end winless streak

AFC TelfordThree away goals did the trick for the Bucks, helping to clinch the first win of 2009 and end a four game winless streak in the Blue Square North, writes AFC Telford blogger Joe Davies.

Gavin Cowan opened the scoring and Carey Bertram continued his excellent scoring record (12 in 16 appearances) to make it 2-0, although when Solihull pulled a goal back after 41 minutes, Telford fans could be forgiven for fearing a comeback.

However, when Blakeman made it 3-1 after 59 minutes the result was no longer in doubt.

It was important to get back to winning ways for more than one reason. Southport could only manage a draw at Vauxhall Motors and although we are level on points, having played two games more, it was good that they could not make the gap between us bigger.

The other reason is that Rob Smith and Larry Chambers have had enough of the poor performances of late and when Rob threatened to walk out on the club this week, I don’t think for one minute he was messing about.

As club chairman Lee Carter said in response to Rob’s threat, he is a very passionate manager and is just as passionate about the team’s results and performances as any fan.

Ever since the day Rob and Larry left Willenhall Town to take over at the New Bucks Head their aim has been very clear: to get AFC Telford back where they belong – and that is in the Conference.

They have made that possible; any fan would agree that the pair have done a good job but their work is not yet finished.

Having gone so many games unbeaten earlier in the season it was expected by many that we would go through a bad patch as every team does at some point in the season.

Having had a bad patch over the last four games that has now been ended, I hope we can go on to re-create the run which saw us beaten only once in 25 games. This would put us in a prime position for – at very least – the play-offs.

Surely a run like that until the end of the season would see us finally back in the Blue Square Premier?
