Town’s fears over windfarm
Tuesday 27th January 2009, 1:00PM GMT.
Twenty extra heavy lorries will be trundling through a Mid Wales town each day if a controversial windfarm gets the go-ahead it was claimed today.
And a major roundabout on Welshpool’s by-pass would also have to be destroyed to allow the massive turbine components to travel through the town, it was claimed.
Residents in Welshpool fear Nuon Renewables, which is behind the scheme, will have to carry turbine parts, including blades of up to 50m through the town centre. Protesters claim it will put the safety of residents at risk and potential damage could have a serious impact on the town.
Nuon Renewables has now submitted a planning application to Powys County Council seeking permission to build 16 turbines at Mynydd Waun Fawr in Llanerfyl, near Welshpool.
Robert Robinson, Welshpool Town Council clerk, said it would mean 10 extra lorries travelling through the town every morning and 10 every night for three months.
“We very concerned about what they plan to do to to our roads and we also fear buildings and trees could be destroyed,” he said.
He said the town council will a special planning meeting in the assembly room of Welshpool Town Hall tomorrow at 6pm.
He urged people to attend the meeting.
Nuon were today unavailable for comment.
