School fails Ofsted test
Monday 26th January 2009, 11:49AM GMT.

A Shropshire primary school has been placed in special measures by Government inspectors who say it is failing to provide an “acceptable” standard of education.
Highley Community Primary School, near Bridgnorth, is the first county council school in more than a year to have failed its inspection.
But education bosses say action is already being taken to improve standards.
A report from Ofsted inspectors says the school is failing to provide an acceptable standard of education because teaching is not good enough to ensure that youngsters make “adequate progress” in their learning.
“The school’s efforts to improve teaching since the last inspection have been ineffectual,” says the report.
“As a result, standards have declined over the last three years and too many pupils are now failing to achieve in line with their potential.
“Leadership and management are inadequate and lack the effectiveness to secure the improvements required to raise standards and help pupils achieve more.”
Inspectors did highlight some good aspects of the school.
The report says: “The headteacher and staff provide a calm, friendly environment where pupils feel safe.
“The school is particularly effective at supporting individual pupils who face difficult social and emotional issues.”
Liz Nicholson, county council director of children and young people’s services said today: “The newly-appointed headteacher, staff and governors are working closely with the council, and actions are already in place to secure improvement.”

Teaching not good enough?? teachers union will blame every one apart from the teachers concerned .
The teachers concerned should be sacked its that simple. Any one found not doing their job properly out here in the real world would be sacked or recieve written and final warnings. No place for excuses of anyone in 2009 sackem & replace them .The schools will have the pick of the crop over the comeing year.

The important thing is to close all those small rural schools who have achieved good or outstanding ofsteds, in that way we can assure equality of school provision by making them all equally cr*p. Don’t give me the ‘we’d be realy good if you gave us more money’ arguement it doesn’t wash, their are schools much larger than Highley receiving similar amounts per pupil and equally schools much smaller receiving similar amounts per pupil its about leadership and teaching ability.

As a parent of a “Highley School Pupil” i feel unless you you know the school you have no mind to judge,I am very happy with the teaching and education my child is getting and she is progressing very nicely, but OFSTED obviously didn’t want to look at the children that are doing well. We as a community need to support and not judge.

I went to highley school myself and it was fine my little sisters go to highley school and they are doing brilliantly. The teachers there are so supportive to the childrens needs. Did anyone Ever take into account the things they are doing well. And it doesn’t help everyone else judging the school.

I am in the education profession and those in the know realise that an Ofsted report is not all it cracks up to be, whether is is good or bad. Another Shropshire school has recently received a ‘Good’ rated Ofsted report when clearly it should not have been. The inspectors only see a snapshot of that school in a very limited time frame and much of what they say is down to a matter of opinion which differs from Inspector to Inspector. The article says that there is a newly appointed Head so he/she should be given time to address the issues and see whether the problems are just down to bad teaching or bad systems that are in place. From the bottom there is only one way to go and that is up.
