Police pledge on drink ‘mayhem’

Monday 26th January 2009, 2:00PM GMT.

VandalismPolice have vowed to crack down on people said to be wreaking “mayhem” in north Shropshire market towns. It follows complaints of vandalism and of pensioners being terrorised.

Officers say they are working with councils and youth services to target small groups who disrupt neighbourhoods with anti-social behaviour and alcohol or drug-fuelled crime.

The pledge follows complaints in Shawbury of youths vandalising the village hall and terrorising elderly people.

Inspector Sarah Wagstaff, head of policing in north Shropshire, said they were drafting in social services, council workers and the Youth Offending Service in a bid to tackle groups and individuals causing problems.

She said: “It’s the same in lots of areas but it’s just a small minority, and they can often give young people a bad name.

“As soon as people see a group of young people together they assume they are up to no good, but it’s just a few, so it’s a case of tackling those individuals.”

She said a group of community-minded people in Shawbury was helping to improve the situation, and this approach was being rolled out across other areas.

“Shawbury is having less problems now, but to be fair the community is doing a lot. There’s quite a few in Shawbury who are helping and making it better.”

Owen Paterson, Conservative MP for North Shropshire, said he was receiving fewer complaints over anti-social behaviour in Shawbury now.

The speed of these authorities is amazing, these issues have been going on for some time in Shawbury, and they respond now – I wonder if it is anything to do with the special visitor at RAF Shawbury !!!
