Bridgnorth’s budget slashed

MoneyOne of Shropshire’s biggest football clubs have been forced to axe their playing budget.

Bridgnorth Town’s shocked management and players were informed after Saturday’s 3-2 Midland Alliance defeat at Causeway.

But Crown Meadow club chairman Eric Eagles, who said the players normally receive travelling expenses, is hopeful normal service will be resumed shortly.

“It (the budget) has been stopped for the next few weeks,” said Eagles.

“We just need to sort out one or two bills with a company that need paying.

“It’s nothing drastic – we just need to make sure we keep the club in the right order.

“It is a short term measure for a long term solution.” But the news may cast a doubt over the futures of members of the Bridgnorth squad.

Manager Andy Marlowe added: “There have been one or two rumours in the last couple of weeks but I didn’t see it coming.

“It’s a massive kick in the guts. The lads have been fantastic all season and hopefully we can keep hold of the players.

“But with the way the economy is, if they get offers from other clubs they will have to consider them – and I understand that.

“We will just have to see what happens.”

Bridgnorth have traditionally been the undisputed third biggest club in Shropshire behind Shrewsbury and Telford, with their halcyon days coming when they were an established force in the Southern League’s Midlands Division.
