Traffic lights scheme postponed
Saturday 24th January 2009, 1:04PM GMT.
Proposals to install traffic lights at a busy Oswestry junction have been postponed to clarify the possible effects of future supermarket developments on the scheme.
Shropshire County Council had announced plans to install traffic lights at the junction of Middleton Road, Salop Road and Roft Street in Oswestry were due to start on Monday.
But as a result of a number of planning applications and the potential for new retail developments at a number of locations, the county council is now reviewing the scheme.
Councillor Gareth Jones, Oswestry Town Council Mayor, who has been campaigning for 20 years for the improvements, said it was a “scandalous situation” to be in and he was “livid” it was being deferred.
He said it was due to possible proposals to develop the Central car park, but the town council, the landlords, say it is not available for development.
John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s cabinet member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “The scheme is ready for construction and was programmed to start on site next week.
“However, there are several development proposals under consideration which could affect traffic flows in the area and before committing the expenditure we want to be sure the scheme is the right one for the future of Oswestry. We are sorry for any inconvenience this delay may cause.”

I wonder what is their motive behind this decission, as the smithfild, burbidge and jt hughes are not near to the juction, only the talk of a plan for central carpark, would effect that junction, or is a way of saving money by not doing the work. what about implementing a tempory light system, like they did before until a decission is made.

I have lived and visited Oswestry all my life and I am still very confused as to why this junction has not had traffic lights installed years ago. It is an extremely busy cross roads and I am supprised there have not been any serios accidents there.
I wrote to the council as an outsider looking in and recommended that the town be made into a one way system. Come in from Shrewsbury over the bridge then down Victoria Rd Upper Brooke St. Welsh Walls, Castle St, Beatrice St and out on the Whittington Rd. A study report would soon iron out any creases.
