Town to get new police stations
Saturday 24th January 2009, 1:06PM GMT.
Two north Shropshire towns are set to get new police stations, the district’s MP said today.
Owen Paterson MP met with police to discuss a range of issues, including the proposed new stations at Market Drayton and Wem.
Mr Paterson has been calling for a new station with cells in Market Drayton for some time, saying police should be freed from their “taxi driver” roles.
He had said that if a new police station was built at Market Drayton, cells should be built with it, freeing up police officers to do their job on the streets rather than ferrying prisoners to towns with cells.
“They are definitely going ahead with the new Market Drayton police station and they are going to have cells, which is very important to me,” he said.
“I’m really pleased about this. They have really listened and responded and they got the point about the cells. We want police on the streets, going around, doing their job not driving police vans.”
Inspector Sarah Wagstaff, chief of policing in the district confirmed both towns are due to get new facilities, and Market Drayton’s was “almost certainly” going to be on the same site as the existing station.

So how come the MP was allowed to announce this, it’s hardly in his remit or is he claiming all the work done was by his fair hand?
