Safety fears over turbine lorries

Saturday 24th January 2009, 1:22PM GMT.

TurbinesThousands of lorries used to carry turbines to a proposed windfarm in Powys could have a “severe impact” on a Mid Wales town, it has been claimed.

Residents in Welshpool say windfarm developers, Nuon Renewables, plan to carry turbine parts, including blades of up to 50m long, through their town.

Protesters claim it will put the safety of residents at risk and potential damage could have a serious impact on the town.

They fear roads, buildings and trees could be damaged or destroyed as the massive objects are transported through the area to windfarm developments in the south of the county. Nuon Renewables plans to build 17 126.5m turbines in Llanbadarn Fynydd.

Councillor Phil Pritchard, Powys County Council member for Welshpool Castle, said: “I am in no doubt the plans to bring the turbines through Welshpool on their way down south will be major. You only have to think of the size of the turbines to realise what it could mean, the blades are massive in both width and length on their own.”

Robert Robinson, Welshpool Town Council clerk, urged residents to attend a special planning meeting on Wednesday. “The town council is holding a planning meeting in the assembly room of Welshpool Town Hall on Wednesday at 6pm,” he said.

“Members will be considering the proposals for the lorry routes regarding transportation of windfarm equipment through Welshpool.”

Where could the turbine blades be coming from if they need to go through the town rather than using the bypass?

Stphen, I don’t know what planet your on but there was no racist remarks in my comment, if there was it wouldn’t of been published, and the problem is as well, they will be transported standing up, or sometimes they are built on site after being transported in smaller parts, Do you really think there going to transport 50m blades through a small town, come on, there isn’t a lorry that could have these things lying down in a trailer.

wind turbines are a waste of time, just another european rule to help the danish sell blades, so what do we get out of this relationship?? we are a floating island of coal, for PEATS sake people wake up to the EU, they are ruining us, we dont need wind and we dont need foreigners to run our power companies and sell us “green” power, ban these wind turbines now

The solution is simple – build a nuclear power station at Welshpool.

Your comment was ‘you Welsh make me sick’ (although you didn’t give the courtesy of a capital letter for ‘Welsh’).

Had you said ‘You protestors make me sick, or ‘You small town dwellers make me sick’ you would have avoided being racist.

However, since you chose to generalise about an entire nationality, your comment was undoubtedly racist.

It seems to me that no-one can any longer attempt to protect their quality of life when it comes to anything to do with these monstrous ugly wind turbines without being shouted down and labeled NIMBYs by the Greens (or should that be Giant Industrial Turbine Supporters?).

my comment is a bit like Prince Harry’s comment – a general term describing a nation with one word. It isn’t racist or it wouldn’t have been published.
