Up to 40 jobs are to be created in Oswestry after discount retailer Home Bargains announced it is to move into premises in the town formerly occupied by Woolworths.Bosses at Home Bargains said they plan to invest £500,000 in refitting and stocking the new branch in Bailey Street, with the aim of opening the 15,000 sq ft store by Easter.

The chain which sells a range of goods, including household items, sweets and drinks, has 170 stores across the UK, including Whitchurch and Telford, employing about 4,000 staff. It is one of the fastest-growing retail chains in the country.

The firm is run by TJ Morris, a family-run Liverpool-based operation started about 30 years ago.

Joe Morris, TJ Morris operations director, said: “We are excited by this new opportunity. Oswestry is an excellent location for us as we specialise in working with market towns providing employment and offering quality products at good prices.”

The shop building is owned by Oswestry Town Council.

Councillor Gareth Jones, town mayor, said: “The building is a landmark store in our town centre and this announcement will hopefully generate confidence about the viability of the town as well as providing local employment.”

Mr Morris said he would not rule out the firm opening up stores at other vacant Woolworths premises in Shropshire and Powys.

He said: “Our property agent is always looking at options.”
