Landlords urged to keep shops secure
Friday 23rd January 2009, 11:17AM GMT.
A leading Shrewsbury businessman today said it was “inconceivable” that anybody could have broken into a town store to set up shop and he urged landlords to be more vigilant with security.
Simon Airey, chairman of Shrewsbury Business Chamber, made the comments after it emerged this week that the former Card Warehouse store in Pride Hill had allegedly been broken into by two men who ran it as the Credit Crunch Clearance store.
The issue was raised at a meeting of the business chamber this week.
Mr Airey said: “People saw there was a business trading there but nobody knew what was going on.
“There’s nothing that can be done about it, because if people move into premises people will presume they have moved in legally. It seems inconceivable.”
He urged landlords to ensure they have good security and to keep an eye on their premises.
Earlier this week it was revealed police had received information that the men running the business had broken into the outlet, and the owner was unaware they were trading.
A police raid on the premises was carried out last week and two men were arrested on suspicion of burglary. They have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
An investigation has been launched and the premises has been secured, while Shropshire County Council’s trading standards officers are looking into the stock that was being sold.
