Hopes of huge town jobs boost

Hundreds of local jobs for the struggling construction industry could be created under £250 million plans to create a new civic heart for Telford, it was claimed today.

Work could start as early as next spring on the proposed Greyhound Link – a new road linking the A442 and M54, taking traffic away from the “racetrack” road round Telford Shopping Centre.

And builders could move on site a couple of months later to transform the Southwater Square area with a new library, ice rink and public squares.

Construction is likely to create 300 to 400 jobs, with the council promising to use local companies and materials where possible.

And hopes are high the new cultural hub will encourage new companies to Telford, bringing with them even more jobs and a boost for the neighbouring shopping centre.

The plans were unveiled today by Telford & Wrekin Council which has earmarked £17 million for the scheme. Public sector partners such as Advantage West Midlands would pump in another £33 million.

Officials hope this will inspire public sector companies to invest the remaining £200 million. Council leader Andrew Eade said: “We’re putting our cards on the table.

“The private sector is struggling and this is the time for Telford & Wrekin Council to provide a lead. We’re absolutely determined to drive this forward as soon as we can.”

First phase is to concentrate on the “core” central area occupied by Spencer’s Shopping Mall and Meeting Point House.

The idea is to create a tree-lined central pedestrian thoroughfare, with “top drawer” architecture on either side.

Dave Sidaway, head of asset and property management for the council, said: “We see this as a national showcase for town centre redevelopment. This investment, combined with Hark Apollo’s plans to redevelop the shopping centre, will transform it into a vibrant city centre.”

Meanwhile, Telford & Wrekin Council’s much criticised 1960s base looks likely to be bulldozed. Final offers have been received from developers and the civic offices could be relocated to Southwater Square.

The existing footbridge will be demolished but it’ll be replaced as part of the link.

Good to see that this vital proposal is slowly moving forward, central Telford is amongst the worst town centres I have ever been to.

Absolutely fantastic news, and just what the town needs – shame they can’t start it this year.

About time Telford was dragged kicking and screaming in to the 21st century, can’t wait to see the first diggers and bulldozers finally move in.

All we need now is for the Shopping Centre to start their redevelopment work and we’ll really be taking massive strides forward.

This is an exciting development and it will be interesting to see what Architectural style is employed.
