Work to start at junction

RoadworksMotorists face major disruption when work starts on improvements to “the most dangerous junction” in Oswestry.

Shropshire County Council has confirmed work is to start on the busy Roft Street, Salop Road and Middleton Road junction on Monday.

Work is expected to take six weeks while traffic signals and a pedestrian crossing are installed, at a cost of about £150,000.

But, while it is set to create traffic chaos, Councillor Gareth Jones, Oswestry mayor, said he was delighted the work is going ahead. He said: “It’s really good news, it’s excellent. It’s the most dangerous junction in the town.”

The council says it will be a complex project, involving the installation of four crossing points, which will require alteration to the kerbs, paving for the pedestrian crossings and the installation of underground cabling.

Work is due to start on March 2.

So we’re to get traffic lights.
Just when three proposals are on the table for large retail developments in Oswestry. And when there is a strong possibility of a fourth – for the central car park site. At least three of these will demand extensive remodeling of the town centre’s traffic system. Especially the central car park scheme which, in terms of planning policy, will be the front-runner, and is a mere 100 metres from the Salop Road junction.
Good move, then, county council – spending all that money on a junction which, in a matter of months, is likely to require altering all over again.
