Safety fear bank will close today

Wednesday 21st January 2009, 11:48AM GMT.

High Street, DawleyA Telford bank was due to close today after bosses decided to shut it due to safety fears.

Bosses at Lloyds TSB decided to close the branch in High Street, Dawley, after it had become “difficult to guarantee the safety of staff and customers” following a raid in September.

But the bank announced yesterday it was considering opening a new branch in the town once regeneration plans come to fruition, while it has already submitted a planning application to install a cash machine in High Street, which could be installed by the end of March.

Councillor Vic Tonks, borough member for Dawley, said: “Ensuring some continuity of service is key for people in Dawley and I am glad Lloyds TSB have shown that they have listened to our concerns.”

Peter Jordan, local director for Lloyds TSB, said: “We have promised that in future we will look at the possibility of returning to Dawley as the town’s regeneration moves ahead.”
