Road still closed in icy spell
Wednesday 21st January 2009, 11:50AM GMT.
A treacherous south Shropshire road where a dozen motorists had to abandon their vehicles this week remains closed today.
Drivers were forced to leave their vehicles on the Burway at Church Stretton in icy conditions on Sunday.
The road was declared impassable and even police 4×4 vehicles were unable to negotiate the steep slope.
Shropshire County Council closed the road and police
warned motorists not to use the shortcut across the Long Mynd in
freezing conditions.
Sergeant Sean Bailey, of Ludlow police, said drivers were potentially putting themselves at risk by trying to use the road.
“We had a number of calls from drivers who had got stuck
trying to get up the Burway, which was very icy and treacherous,” he
said.
He added that many drivers left their vehicles and had to walk back down to Church Stretton.
