Wednesday 21st January 2009, 5:15PM GMT.

Car accidentA speeding driver struck a Shropshire family’s car, flipping it up in the air, before fleeing the scene.

The mother and her young sons inside the vehicle were only saved from serious injury by their seatbelts, police said today.

The collision happened on the westbound dual carriageway of the A5 between Telford and Shrewsbury, about 400 yards from Preston island, shortly before 8pm yesterday.

The family’s blue Suzuki Wagon was struck from behind by a silver or white vehicle, causing the Suzuki to spin and flip over once before landing upright on the nearside verge.

The mum and her two sons, aged 11 and five, were taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for check-ups after the accident but suffered just bruising and shock.

Constable Damian Madeley said the other vehicle involved appeared to be travelling at excessive speed, and failed to stop, continuing towards Shrewsbury.

He said: “I am anxious to receive any information which might help me trace the driver of the vehicle which failed to stop and would appeal for witnesses of the collision to please contact me at Shrewsbury Police Station on 0300 3333000.”

    ????

400 yards from the Preston Island, westbound?

I’ll be interested to see the official report, but that – to me – sounds like the offending driver not braking; either in good time or not at all. And causing that much damage to the Suzuki, the offender manages to drive away from the scene? Was he / she driving a Challenger Tank??
