County jobless total rises

A record number of people are losing their jobs with unemployment today hitting 1.92 million, the highest figure in more than a decade, writes Business Editor Amy Bould.
More than 131,000 people found themselves out of work in the last three months with the two million barrier expected to be breached in February.

The grim figures were mirrored in Shropshire and Mid Wales, where the number of people claiming the jobseekers’ allowance rose by 982 to 8,748.
Shropshire saw a rise in the jobless figure of 342 up to 3,592. In Telford & Wrekin the figure was up from 3,042 to 3,490 and in Powys it rose by 192 to 1,666.
The biggest rise in Shropshire was in Shrewsbury and Atcham where the figure rose by 90 from 1,048 to 1,138. In Oswestry the number of people claiming the benefit went up by 81 to 669 and in Bridgnorth, it rose from 505 to 558.
North Shropshire saw a rise in unemployment of 66 to 799 and in South Shropshire, the figures was up 52 to 428.
