Chambers wants league win
Wednesday 21st January 2009, 1:10PM GMT.
Larry Chambers saw AFC Telford United book their place in the northern area final of the Setanta Shield – and insisted he would swap it for a league win.
The Bucks beat Kettering 3-2 after extra-time last night to move into the last four of the Conference’s league cup competition.
Terry Fearns opened the scoring and Jamie Vermiglio netted twice in a dramatic encounter that saw the Poppies finish with 10 men and their manager Mark Cooper sent to the stands.
Telford No 2 Chambers admitted they were delighted to prolong their involvement in the competition but insisted he would rather have won last Saturday’s Blue Square North clash at home to Hyde – a game they lost 3-2.
“There always seems to be plenty of drama in these Setanta Shield games and the lads seem to enjoy it,” he said.
“It was important we bounced back from Saturday with a good performance and, over the 120 minutes, I think we probably deserved the victory.
“But I’d much rather swap this win for the three points against Hyde last Saturday because that’s still disappointing.
“It will take a while to get over that defeat because it shouldn’t have happened.
“While last night’s performance was pleasing, the priority is what we do in the league – this is just the icing on the cake.”
Barrow beat York 3-1 in a delayed area quarter-final last night and now entertain Southport for the right to meet the Bucks in the next round, in a game scheduled to be played on Tuesday, February 3.
Chambers insisted he had no problem facing either – as long as they are drawn to play at the New Bucks Head.
Meanwhile, the Bucks have announced new dates for three games that have had to be re-arranged due to their various cup exploits.
The trip to Farsley Celtic has been moved to Tuesday, February 10.
The game at home to Vauxhall Motors will now be played on Tuesday, February 17, while the return fixture will take place on Tuesday, March 10.
The FA Trophy trip to Kettering on Saturday week is now a noon kick off.
