Rapist jailed after attack tape found
Tuesday 20th January 2009, 1:23PM GMT.
A Powys man has been jailed for 12 years after a video tape he made showing him raping his victim was found. Selwyn Williams initially denied anything happened.
But a member of his family found the video in a locked cabinet at his home and handed it over to the police in Newtown.
Officers viewed it and realised Williams, 55, of Dinas, Treowen, Newtown, had filmed himself raping a teenage girl, Mold Crown Court heard yesterday.
Simon Mills, prosecuting, said it was “a very distressing piece of film”.
He said the victim was saying no and trying to stop him, but was unable to do so.
Williams admitted eight charges of rape, making and possessing an indecent film and taking 10 indecent erotic photographs of his victim.
The court heard Williams, who showed no emotion when the 12-year sentence was passed, had repeatedly raped his victim.
Judge John Rogers QC said the only mitigation was his guilty plea, which spared his victim giving evidence.
Williams must now register with the police as a sex offender for life. The court heard the victim went to the police last August to complain of rape and other sexual misconduct.
Arrested and questioned by police he was adamant nothing had happened and that the complaint was false. He described the accusations as “rubbish”.
The court heard when shown some Polaroid photographs which police found at his home, he agreed he took explicit photographs of her but said she wanted him to do it.
Mr Mills said after Williams had been charged, a member of his family found the video.
Paul Smith, for Williams, said he was not a threat to society beyond his victim.
