Cars stuck on icy road
Tuesday 20th January 2009, 11:44AM GMT.
Motorists were forced to abandon their cars in icy conditions after the Burway at Church Stretton became impassable.
At least a dozen vehicles got stuck trying to navigate the Burway’s steep slope on Sunday evening, with ice covering much of the road surface.
Police have now warned drivers not to use the short cut across the Long Mynd during icy conditions.
The Burway was deemed impassable, even for those in 4×4 vehicles, and was closed by Shropshire County Council’s highways department.
The road is not gritted and is still closed.

There’s a surprise, the Burway getting icy in winter? Whatever next?

On 8.1.9,i came over the Long Mynd from the glider centre side down into Church Stretton early afternoon, with no problems. But going back 3.30pmish my 4×4 started sliding on ice on the descent,to the point i asked my 12yr old son to open his door and jump out, before my truck went over the edge.I was very lucky my HiLUX stopped right on the edge.I cannot believe there are no crash barriers on thye steep declines, the Burway should definatly be closed when icy before someone is less lucky.

“AS” I take it you stopped the HiLux before asking your son to leap out on to the icy road and follow behind? Why didn’t you just abandon your truck and walk?

It never ceases to amaze me how stupid and irresponsible people can be. At the best of times the Burway is potentially a dangerous road but in very icy conditions – excuse me.
All drivers should have a duty of care, not only to themselves and their passengers but also to the people who have to rescue them when they get stuck. Taking unnecessary risks is ridiculous but trying to use the Burway in icy conditions must surely be the epitome of stupidity.

Remember the road was still officially open,my truck blocking the descent at its narrowest point would have caused serious problems for any subsequent vehicles, perhaps emergency vehicles trying to pass.

So it’s OK if the road is still open even if it’s covered in ice? At what point should it be open and closed – when it’s nearly deadly? Surely, a little common sense should provail and the driver make a decision!!!

Prevail not Provail, and i did make a decision based on the earlier trouble-free crossing,as i have reiterated with hindsight i should not have chanced it but leaving my truck on the descent would have been very dangerous for the above mentioned reasons. My point from the start is that the roads over the Long Mynd should be closed to vehicular traffic when temperatures drop below 5 degrees to be safe.I would suggest closed permanently if the cost of “CENT RES” type barriers is beyond the relevant authorities.

Thanks for the spelling spot AD – check your own grammer and presentation in post 1 though; and your common sense while your at it!

Thankyou for the worldly advice KK.

Er… It’s ‘grammar’, and it’s ‘while you’re at it!’.

Peter… There’s no comma needed before your “and”.
