Burberry cuts hundreds of jobs
Tuesday 20th January 2009, 10:30AM GMT.
Clothing company Burberry has announced plans to close its Rotherham sewing factory, resulting in the loss of up to 290 workers.
The closure and job cuts are part of the brand’s cost-cutting initiative aimed at saving up to £50 million a year.
Burberry said on Tuesday it will shut the factory and shift production 20 miles north to another Yorkshire plant in Castleford, with supporting operations also due to be scaled back.
The company has said it also plans on cutting some 250 jobs in Spain, after news like-for-like retail sales fell three per cent in the third quarter.
Burberry’s chief executive, Angela Ahrendts, said the cuts would enable the firm to “trade through the current difficult environment and emerge even stronger when the global economy recovers”.
Ms Ahrendts added Burberry still expected to achieve its profit targets.
