Week to focus on our chippies

Saturday 17th January 2009, 9:00AM GMT.

Chips (picture: PA)Chip shops in Shropshire hope to batter the competition during a week-long celebration of one of the nation’s best-loved dishes.

National Chip Week will run from February 9 to 15 and seven county shops are taking part.

Event spokesman David Gough said: “National Chip Week is a great opportunity for the whole country to celebrate chips.”

In Shropshire, the chip shops participating are Flippin Fish and Tasty Plaice, both Shrewsbury; The Codfather in Ludlow; Traditional Fish and Chips, Salop Fish Bar and Wots Cookin, all Oswestry and The Big Blue in Telford.

Mr Gough said: “There are about 11,000 fish and chip shops across the UK, so what could be better to celebrate National Chip Week than a visit to your local chippie?

“A portion of takeaway fish and chips contains just 60 per cent of the calories found in sweet-and-sour chicken, egg-fried rice and a portion of vegetable spring rolls.

“Not only do chips contain all the goodness of potatoes and taste great – but they are also fantastic value too! So its no surprise that more than a staggering 255 million fish and chips meals are sold in fish and chip shops each year.”

More than 800 UK chip shops will take part in the promotional event and people who visit selected stores could win prizes.

my favourite is Flippin Fish on Hereford Road in Shrewsbury, near to the petrol station. They’ve only been open a few months but their fish is by far the best i’ve ever tasted from a take away

Anybody remember Palladini’s in Belle Vue on the town side of the Railway Bridge. It will reveal your age if you can, next to John Kerr’s who took it over after Mr. Paladdini closed down they were the best in the Country and both of them used to do a special rate for members of Meole Brace Scout Troop who had their hut in Upper Road. Bags of “scratchings” were free if one was quick enough to get there before some other kid and who thought of cholesterol in those days.
Fish and Chips these days are going down the pan, excuse the pun, they are not like to used to be and neither are the prices.
