Trainer aims to get back to Premier

Saturday 17th January 2009, 12:50PM GMT.

New signing Phil Trainer has set his sights on firing AFC Telford United to promotion – and securing himself an immediate return to the Blue Square Premier.

The 27-year-old has dropped a level to come to Telford, joining on loan for the rest of the season from Oxford United after meeting with boss Rob Smith and assistant Larry Chambers.

Having fulfilled his dream of playing at the highest level of the non-League game with the Yellows, the Wolverhampton-based ace is now eager to get back there with the Bucks as fast as possible.

“I’m a local lad and it’s only just down the M54 so as soon as I knew they were interested I wanted to come here,” he revealed.

“Larry gave me a call and he’s a very ambitious man – as is Rob – so I jumped at the chance.”I spoke to them before I signed for Oxford but that was a chance I had to take because it was the league I wanted to play in. I’ve come here now and hopefully I can get back to the level I was at with Telford.

“If we can go up then I’d like to stay longer – the set-up’s amazing and the crowds are so much higher than most teams in this league.

“Hopefully I can help the lads get to where they all want to be.”

The former Moor Green man made a big impression at the Kassam Stadium last season and had bagged four goals from 16 outings this term, but has been told he does not feature in new boss Chris Wilder’s plans.

He said: “I started this season with an injury and struggled a bit when I came back, but I started scoring and it’s been up and down from there. The new gaffer there has only seen me in three games. I scored in the one and I thought I was decent in the other two, so I was a bit surprised when he told me I could go out on loan.”
