Phone threat to 999 hoaxers

People making hoax calls to the fire service in Shropshire face losing the use of their mobile phones as officials step up action to combat a crime they fear is putting lives at risk.
More than 400 malicious 999 calls a year are made to the fire service headquarters in Shrewsbury, sending firefighters and appliances out on false missions when they might be needed at a real emergency.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is now contacting the telephone networks to ask for the disconnection of any mobile telephones used to make malicious emergency calls.
“Most of our malicious calls originate from children and young adults,” said Dave Bartlett of the brigade’s fire signal team.
“I would like to impress upon them that once they have had their phone disconnected, their provider will not reinstate the service and £70 or £80 is a lot to pay for a piece of plastic that can no longer be used as a phone or to text your friends.
“We are concerned that the continuing misuse of this public emergency system is putting road users at risk, removing essential cover for real emergencies and reducing the time available for our staff to carry out public safety work and training.”
Mr Bartlett warned: “People must understand that whenever a 999 call is made, we always record the call, so we can identify the caller’s voice, and we always know the number of the telephone being used to make the call.”
Anyone convicted of making a malicious emergency call faces a maximum £2,000 fine and/or a year in prison.
Firefighters regularly go into schools to educate pupils about malicious calls and teach them about fire safety and fire prevention.
Mr Bartlett added: “One foolish caller may think it is a joke to call out the fire service but it will result in someone’s death if we can’t get to them in time because we have been called out by a hoaxer.”
As part of the drive to educate young people about making malicious calls the service’s intervention team will accept referrals from concerned parents, teachers and other professionals.

It’s a start, but how much of a disincentive is this really to hoax callers?
Because truth to tell, they’ll just get another phone to replace the last one.
It would be better to name and shame them and then chuck them in prison for a week. Or make them work in a call-centre. That’ll probably put them off phones for life ;-)

I think they should be put into the fire simulater, so they realise what fire is. then asked them would they like to be in there for over 20mins as the local crew was responding to a hoax call.

I agree with the fire simulator, or when the fire service go on training exercises with crushed cars. or take them on real emergencies. then they can see the real part of there work, dont worry, one day these hoax callers will have to pay the price with a real emergency and the fire service will just say, sorry, please call back when you have grown up, we dont believe you.

These people need to live in Australia and see the devastation first hand. If we did not have our firefighters on hand immediately in some circumstances it would be terrible. Personally I have witnessed first hand after a fire, dead people, dead animals, loss of property, houses lost, vehicles lost. Try to envisage what would happen if the people we need the most are sent off on a wild goose chase. Help is needed immediately. Stop this problem now, before it is too late.

As a retired Fire Officer a few years ago we had a spate of false calls we eventually caught the person responsible, he went to court and was given a paltry fine, so prior to this I worked out the cost to the ratepayers of his malicious calls and put in for costs this was granted by the court. He then had a paltry fine and a massive cost judgement. That soon took the smile off his face.

I too have seen the devastation caused by fire, in Oz, – but when was someone actually given a £2,000 fine?
Taking a mobile off one of these nutters is a joke, – they will just buy another one.
Those 400 malicious calls cost US money in Council Taxes. Perhaps these people who think it is a joke don’t pay any taxes.
There is no such thing as a free lunch – or a free Fire Service.
