Waste bid to go on show

Wednesday 14th January 2009, 3:15PM GMT.

Veolia Environmental Services, the contractor for the Shropshire Waste Partnership, will unveil the plans to the public at an exhibition and opponents of the plan today vowed to go through the details with a fine-tooth comb.

They are concerned about the potential health implications and say the decision to build the facility is “wrong”.

IncineratorBut Veolia is urging people to turn out to the exhibition to meet experts to discuss the scheme and find out exactly what is planned.

The energy-from-waste facility is proposed to be built at Battlefield and would be able to produce energy from 90,000 tonnes of waste a year.

Today Veolia said it hoped to lodge a planning application within the next few days and if the proposal is successful the facility would be completed by 2013.

But Linda Crane, from Safe Waste in Shropshire, said she felt that the only right decision for the site would be if it was not built.

“We will be looking very closely at the plans. They assured us that the chimneys were going to have filters to trap particles, so we will be looking for that,” she said. “But this is the wrong decision, and one which could affect us all for the next 30 years.”

The exhibition will take place at the Household Recycling Centre office block on the Battlefield Enterprise Park, Shrewsbury, between 3pm and 7pm tomorrow.

It will also be held at the Lantern on Meadow Farm Drive between 3pm and 7pm on Friday and from 9.30am to 1pm on Saturday.

Veolia Environmental Se- rvices spokeswoman Cath- erine Slaytor said: “We are putting in our planning application later this week or early next week and would urge people to come along to our exhibitions to talk to experts from the energy from waster field and find out first-hand what the plans are.”

On Monday Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury, is to discuss the plans with Veolia chief executive Jean-Dominique Mallet at the House of Commons. Mr Kawczynski said: “I will be looking at the proposals with a very critical eye on behalf of my constituents.”
