FA Cup hero Andy Keogh insists he can fire Wolves to the Premier League – as Michael Kightly urged fans to stay off his back.

The Republic of Ireland international scored the first goal and helped set up the second in a man of the match display to help Mick McCarthy’s gun down Birmingham 2-0 last night.

Keogh’s performance helped secure a fourth round tie at home to Premier League Middlesbrough on January 24.

His goal was only his third of the season and first since October 4 as he has been forced to play second fiddle to Chris Iwelumo and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

But the 22-year-old reckons he can bring the necessary quality to the attack to ensure a return to the top flight.

“I know if I’m called upon, I’m more than ready to lead the attack and help us get promotion,” said Keogh.

“I’ve done it in the Championship now, I know what I can do and it’s about me progressing as a player.”

Keogh has also had to cope with the double mental battle of being restricted to a cameo role and winning over the Molineux boo boys.

But the former Scunthorpe man says he has the mental strength to cope.

“It’s mentally tough but I have to keep believing in myself – you don’t become a bad player just because you’re not playing,” he said.

“Everyone’s got their opinion and who am I to say they (fans) are wrong?

“I’ve got to be mentally strong and do it for myself and the team and as I do that, the goodness will shine through and people will see that.”

Kightly, who set up both goals, called for fans to give Keogh a break after last night’s heroics.

“He’s had a bit of stick from the fans this season and it’s hard to play with that on your back,” said the winger.

“He showed everyone last night what he can do and he’ll do that whenever he gets a chance, if he’s confident.”
