Man charged over Sol chanting

Tuesday 13th January 2009, 2:30PM GMT.

CourtA 34-year-old Telford man was today charged with indecent chanting aimed at Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell.

Stuart Turner, of Queen Street, Wellington, was charged along with 10 other Tottenham Hotspur fans, including three youths, by Hampshire Police.

Turner was arrested in December and released on police bail until today when police charged him.

His arrest brought the total number arrested to 12, following the match bet-ween Portsmouth and Tottenham at Fratton Park on September 28.

Detectives released CCTV of the fans suspected of indecent chanting during the match, which they said included alleged racist and homophobic chanting aimed at the former Tottenham and England defender.

The FA said it would ban for life any fans it could prove were involved.

Turner, along with the other 10 defendants, has been bailed to appear before South East Hampshire magistrates on Tuesday.

Liz Harding, Hampshire Police spokeswoman, said: “Following extensive inquiries, police will not be taking any further action against an 18-year-old man from Essex.”
