Cemetery plot cover is stolen
Tuesday 13th January 2009, 11:00AM GMT.
Thieves have stolen a £500 heavy plastic grave cover used to protect open burial plots at Hengoed Cemetery near Oswestry.
John Ward, cemetery manager, said: “It is pretty bad that somebody would go out of their way to take the cover.
“It is used for a very specific job and somebody would have had to have their own transport to take it.”
Mr Ward said security at the Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council-owned cemetery would be reviewed.
“It is an isolated cemetery in a rural setting and I suppose is easy meat for thieves,” he said. “We don’t want to have to close the cemetery or focus too much on security because we want the public to be able to get access to the cemetery whenever they want.”
The grey cover, measuring 8ft by 4ft, together with four metal fixing legs, was taken from a storage compound at the cemetery between January 4 and Friday.
Police spokesman Richard Ewels said the cover was bulky and a vehicle would probably have been used. Information to police on 0300 333 3000.
