Bucks in trophy troubles alert
Tuesday 13th January 2009, 1:00PM GMT.
Assistant manager Larry Chambers is warning AFC Telford United not to under-estimate little-known FA Trophy opponents Hayes & Yeading United tonight.
Telford face the Blue Square South side in a re-arranged second round tie at the New Bucks Head, with the winners having been drawn away to either Tiverton or Kettering.
Hayes chief Garry Haylock has built a side packed with youngsters who failed to make the grade at nearby League clubs such as Wycombe and Millwall.
The Bucks have been ravaged by injuries in recent weeks, and Chambers expects their visitors to give them a stern examination.
“I’ve spoken to two or three managers now, and every one of them has said they are a very good side,” he revealed.
“The one report we’ve had says that, on their day, they are the best side in their league but they’ve got a lot of young players so they lack a bit of consistency.
“They’re probably under-achieving in terms of their capabilities at the minute, but they’ve got a young manager who’s very tactically astute.”
Telford’s injury list has hardly improved since the weekend, with right-back Lee Vaughan the only player in with a chance of returning to the squad.
His ankle injury would have ruled him out when the game was first meant to be played on Saturday, but he could come onto the bench tonight if he passes a late fitness test.
Stuart Whitehead and Steve Jagielka (both medial ligaments), Indy Khela (hamstring) and Simon Forsdick (knee) are all still ruled out, while Danny Edwards is cup-tied.
Chambers and boss Rob Smith are continuing to look to add at least one new face to their squad, and are hopeful of completing a deal ahead of the Blue Square North clash at home to Hyde on Saturday.
“The players we’re looking at are still at clubs and we’re trying to sort things out, but it takes time.”
