Bishop unveils job move on YouTube
Tuesday 13th January 2009, 12:30PM GMT.
Shrewsbury’s bishop will leave the county this year to take up a new post as the Bishop of St Albans after he announced his appointment today on video website YouTube.
The Right Reverend Alan Smith is the first Church of England bishop to announce his new job through a three minute video on the internet.
He was named by Downing Street as the 10th Bishop of St Albans, taking over from the the Right Reverend Christopher Herbert, who retired this month.
Today Dr Smith spoke of his mixed emotions about moving.
He said: “I am going to miss Shropshire and Telford and all the exciting things that are about to happen. There’s the new unitary authority in the county, there’s the opening of the theatre here in Shrewsbury and then across in Telford, there is the major development of the town centre.
“In the diocese, I will miss working on our plans for starting new churches in Telford and the links with our overseas dioceses.”
But Dr Smith said he was excited about the move.
He added: “St Albans is a diocese which is very forward looking.”
Dr Smith is expected to finish his current role in Shropshire just before Easter, ending a near-20 year association with the Diocese of Lichfield, which he joined as Diocesan Missioner and Team Vicar in Walsall in 1990.
He was appointed Area Bishop of Shrewsbury in 2001, becoming responsible for all the Anglican churches in the northern half of Shropshire.
