Two held after 60 cars vandalised

Monday 12th January 2009, 4:00PM GMT.

Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with a “vehicle crime wave” in which more than 60 vehicles in Market Drayton were damaged.

The vehicles either had their tyres slashed or suffered other damage on Saturday night.

Inspector Sarah Wagstaff said today thousands of pounds’ worth of damage had been caused.

She said two people had been arrested on suspicion of causing the damage – an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old youth.

The 16-year-old has been remanded in custody in connection with an unrelated incident involving an alleged assault and other matters in Market Drayton on the same night. The older suspect has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Inspector Wagstaff said: “A considerable amount of damage was caused running into several thousand pounds. We are appealing for witnesses and information which might assist our inquiries.

“Most of the damaged vehicles were parked in and around the town centre, including the Dalelands housing estate, from about 8.30pm onwards. Some were parked in car parks and others on the roadside.

“We received significant help from the public and as a result the two arrests were made later on Saturday night.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Market Drayton police station on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
