A Shropshire woman who was amongst the oldest in Britain has died aged 109.
Mildred “Chip” Russell, died at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital following a short illness.
She had been living at her home in Radbrook, Shrewsbury, with the support of Age Concern Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.
Mrs Russell claimed that the secret to her longevity was regular gin and tonics.
Mrs Russell and her husband Stanley took on the Railway Inn in Dorrington in 1939 when their only son John was evacuated to Shropshire.
Her grandson Paul Russell, of Copthorne, whose father, John, died last year, today said: “I think she was the oldest woman in Shropshire. She liked a joke but she could put you right if you stepped out of line. She was the boss of the family.”
Mrs Russell leaves Paul, two other grandsons, Michael and Ian, and four great-grandchildren, Romana, Stephen, Jayne and Emma.
