Shrewsbury Town Football Club’s big derby match against Chester today fell foul of the weather after overnight temperatures plummeted to as low as -6C (21F).
Match referee Scott Mathieson carried out a pitch inspection at the Prostar Stadium this morning and decided the ground was not playable.
The fall in mercury was far lower than anyone at the club had anticipated with weather forecasters actually predicting temperatures are set to rise this weekend following the spell of icy weather.
Ian Whitfield, media manager for Shrewsbury Town FC, said today: “The temperatures in Shrewsbury fell to -6C overnight which was far lower than any forecast the club had yesterday.
“This has meant the frost has caused some problems in and around the Prostar Stadium.”
AFC Telford’s FA Trophy second-round clash against Hayes & Yeading at the New Bucks Head also fell victim to the weather.
An inspection this morning found the pitch there was also frozen and unplayable.
That game and the club’s Setanta Shield match against Kettering Town will be rescheduled.
But Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said warmer weather was on the way.
