Car accident schoolgirl airlifted to hospital
Saturday 10th January 2009, 9:40AM GMT.
A Shropshire primary school pupil was airlifted to hospital with a suspected head injury after being involved in a collision with a car.
The young girl attends Woodside Primary School in Oswestry.
She was flown to Birmingham Children’s Hospital after the collision in Old Fort Road in the town yesterday as parents picked up their youngsters.
As shocked parents and residents stood by, the air ambulance landed in Old Fort Road and a land ambulance and a rapid response vehicle also attended at the scene at 3.20pm.
Police officers closed off the road to allow paramedics to carry out their work.
Suzie Fothergill, ambulance service spokeswoman, said the air ambulance from Cosford was scrambled after reports of the collision.
She said: “When our crew arrived they found the young girl, who we believe is about five years old, lying on the road. She was with her dad at the time.
“Crews believe she may have suffered a suspected head injury so decided to have her airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital for further treatment and assessment.”
The girl was today belie-ved to be recovering at home after being discharged.
Maria Hawkaluk, West Mercia Police spokeswoman, said officers were alerted to a report of a collision between a car and a pedestrian at 3.25pm. She added the car involved was a silver Ford Galaxy people carrier.
A resident, who did not want to be named, said: “It was a little kiddy, it was just after school.”
