Heritage trail set to get the go-ahead
Friday 9th January 2009, 9:32AM GMT.
Plans for a new heritage trail to boost tourism in Ellesmere look set to get the seal of approval from district planners. The new trail, which would feature four interpretation markers and two toposcopes in the town, would be aimed at bringing more tourists into the town centre to generate extra spending.
Members of North Shropshire District Council’s development control committee are being recommended to grant permission for the signs to be installed at a meeting on Wednesday.
The scheme has been designed to help encourage visitors to branch out, when visiting either the mere or the canal.
The signs and markers would be put up throughout the mere, wharf, canal and town centre.
Ann Hartley, Ellesmere town councillor, said it was a common problem that people visiting the wharf did not venture into the town centre, and people visiting the mere also stayed in that area, so town centre businesses missed out on extra income.
She said the scheme would help people to realise what else was on offer.
She said: “It’s just to make the vital link between the mere, the town centre and the wharf and canal area.”
The meeting takes place on Wednesday from 2pm at Edinburgh House, New Street, Wem.
