Hankey out to mend broken heart
Friday 9th January 2009, 10:14AM GMT.
Shropshire thrower Ted Hankey meets John ‘Boy’ Walton in the quarter-finals of the BDO World Championship tonight at Lakeside – and he is determined to avoid a repeat performance of 2001.
Yorkshireman Walton prevented Hankey from successfully defending his title eight years ago at darts’ spiritual home, beating the Telford man 6-2 at the final hurdle.
“He broke my heart in 2001 and I don’t want to let him do it again,” said Hankey.
“That won’t play on my mind tonight, though. It has been and gone and I will just be focussed on playing my darts.
“I’ve watched him this tournament and seen a few things in his game I think I can exploit.”The Count cruised through to the last eight of the competition with a 4-1 win over Ross Montgomery on Wednesday night, while Walton put in a supreme performance to whitewash defending champion Mark Webster 4-0 in just 38 minutes.
Hankey, world champion in 2000, looks a calmer prospect than he has in recent years since cutting back on his alcohol intake.
In tonight’s other quarter-final, sixth-seed Gary Robson takes on third seed Martin Adams.
