Building date plan for store
Friday 9th January 2009, 9:35AM GMT.
Work could start on a new Tesco store for Oswestry as early as autumn next year if given the go-ahead, it has been revealed.Timber firm Richard Burbidge has put forward plans to relocate from its current site on Unicorn Road and Whittington Road, to make way for a new supermarket, cinema and two restaurants.
In addition, two bays in the listed Cambrian Works railway building will be preserved and developed for community and leisure use if the plans get the go-ahead.
The firm says it will create much needed new retail facilities and employment opportunities in the town, while allowing Burbidge’s to make its business more efficient, remain competitive and to protect employment.
The company is the largest private sector employer in the town, employing 350 people.
Peter Vernon, of Vernon and Co, planning consultant for the bid, said: “The provisional timescale for commencing work on the new facilities is autumn 2009, and autumn 2010/11 for the retail/leisure development.”
