Body of missing man found
Friday 9th January 2009, 12:05PM GMT.
A search for a missing 43-year-old man has been called off by police after a body was discovered beneath the Chirk viaduct near Oswestry.
Although the body has yet to be formally identified, West Mercia Police said the search for Alan Martin Jones, of Penley, near Wrexham, had been discontinued.
Officers from West Mercia and North Wales Police launched a search for Mr Jones after he went missing just before 8pm on Wednesday.
The body was discovered by police at about 12.15pm yesterday.
Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: “At this stage it is being treated as an unexplained death and a full report on the circumstances will eventually be made to the Wrexham coroner.”
He asked for anyone with any information about the incident to contact Wrexham police or the police in Shrewsbury on 0300 333 3000.
The search for Mr Jones was launched after he disappeared from a property in St Martins. He left an address in Ifton Fields on Wednesday and was due to meet a family member at Stans Superstore nearby. He was seen leaving the property but went behind the supermarket and disappeared.
The search, involving a North Wales Police helicopter, was launched after family members said it was out of character for Mr Jones to go missing. A North Wales Police spokeswoman said today Wrexham police officers were investigating the incident.
