Who’s Who at Doctor Exhibition

Matt Smith is the new Doctor Who

So, now we know who’s Who, writes David Burrows.

Last Saturday’s announcement that Matt Smith was to take over one of the most famous roles on British television to become the 11th doctor was generally greeted with headlines like “Doctor Who?”

But if you want to know more about who WAS Who, and what is what when it comes to making the iconic series, then an exhibition which has materialised in Liverpool may be just what you’re after.

Merseyside’s impressive Spaceport is playing host to The Art Of Doctor Who – Script to Screen.

It’s by no means the most in-depth look at the timelord there has ever been, but that is part of its beauty. There is enough there to keep the enthusiasts interested, while at the same time the whole thing is bitesized enough not to be boring for those who may get dragged along for the ride.

The Doctor Who exhibitionInside, touchscreen technology allows you to discover the previous incarnations of the Doctor, from William Hartnell’s debut – screened the day after the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963 – through to one hit wonder Paul McGann and up to the present day with David Tennant.

There are also quizzes so you can test your knowledge of the man from Gallifrey (and by the way, I’ve given you one of the answers in this article already!).

As well as this there is information galore. Discover how new creatures – such as the wonderful Ood – were created and how old foes like the Cybermen, Daleks and Sontarans were updated for a new generation.

You can even learn about the costumes – although sadly security prevented me stealing David Tennant’s pinstriped suit (for me) or Kylie Minogue’s Astrid Peth outfit from a Christmas special (not for me!).

As you move around the exhibition you can’t help but pause for photoshoots with characters like K9, the scarecrows and, of course, the Tardis itself.

There are also scripts and shooting schedules to give an insight into how the show makes it to the screen as well a condensed version of Doctor Who Confidential, revealing some of the tricks of the trade which transform mini special effects explosions into characters being riddled with gunshots.

If all this isn’t enough, the admission price also covers the spaceport itself. This educational tool – essentially aimed at children – reveals some of the secrets of the universe and space travel, and you can try your hand at creating a moonrise and even control the tides, as well as joining an astronaut for a trip aboard the international space station in the 360 degree “space dome” and taking a trip through time in a specially simulator.

  • The Art Of Doctor Who – Script to Screen, is at the Spacedome until March 1. Admission prices are £9.50 for adults, £6.50 for children, £7 concessions or £26.50 for a family ticket for two adults and three children. For information telephone 0151 330 1333.

I still say Harry Hill would have made a far better Dr than Matt Smith
