Security plea after heating oil theft

Thursday 8th January 2009, 5:10PM GMT.

Shropshire residents are being urged to step up security on their outdoor fuel tanks after heating oil was stolen from a home near Broseley.

Police have issued advice on how to keep outdoor domestic fuel tanks as secure as possible following the theft of 500 litres of oil from a property in the Linley area.

The tank was targeted between about 5.30pm on Monday and 8am on Tuesday.

A vehicle was heard in the area at about 11.30pm on Monday but it is not known whether this was connected with the theft.

Constable Tim Weaver, Shropshire division’s crime reduction officer, said there were some steps people could take to improve the security of their outdoor tanks.

“Locks should be fitted where possible and you could consider fitting a specialist alarm, which registers a sudden drop in oil levels and signs of tampering,” he said.

Anyone with information about the theft in Broseley should contact police on 0300 333 3000.
